The Hotel Chelsea New York

The Hotel Chelsea is a famous and magnificent hotel located in Chelsea City. Constructed between 1883 and 1884, the hotel was designed by Philip Hubert. Prior to becoming a hotel, the building served as a housing cooperative. It has been home to numerous writers, musicians, artists, and entertainers—many of whom continued to reside there well into the 21st century. By 2022, the majority of the Chelsea—which had previously functioned as a housing cooperative—was transformed into a luxury hotel. The building is designated as a historic landmark by New York City and is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The front facade of the Hotel Chelsea stands 11 stories high, while its rear section rises to 12 stories. The facade is vertically divided into five sections and constructed of brick; it features several iron balconies adorned with floral designs. Additionally, the hotel is topped by a mansard roof. Furthermore, the building incorporates iron floor beams and features spacious, column-free rooms.
When this hotel was started, the ground floor featured an entrance hall, four shops, and a restaurant. Over time, significant changes have been made to the building, and now, a restaurant named 'El Quijote' and a bar occupy a section of the lower floor. The Hotel Chelsea was one of the city's earliest buildings, featuring duplex and penthouse apartments; additionally, it boasts a rooftop terrace (roof garden). Originally, the hotel comprised no more than 100 apartments; during the 20th century, these were subdivided into smaller units to create 400 units, and currently, a total of 155 units remain.
Knott Hotels purchased this hotel in 1921 and operated it until 1942, after which David Bard acquired it and saved it from bankruptcy. In 1947, Julius Gross and Joseph Gross joined Bard as co-owners. Following David Bard's death in 1964, his son Stanley managed the hotel for 43 years. As the hotel's condition began to deteriorate, various minor repairs were undertaken. The Cross and Gross families assumed control of the hotel in 2007; they faced numerous disputes with tenants, which ultimately led to the closure of the Chelsea in 2011 for extensive renovations. The hotel's ownership changed hands twice during the 2010s, and then, in 2016, BD Hotels took control of the property; finally, in 2022, the Chelsea reopened.
